The Makarska Riviera is the 60 km of beach towns between Brela and Gradac, pinned between the Adriatic and the grey limestone of Biokovo. From Split Airport it is about an hour and fifteen minutes: motorway to Dugopolje, then down through the tunnel to the coast road. Buses run, but they stop at every town along the strip and leave you on the main road above your accommodation — which, on a hillside riviera, means a descent with suitcases in the afternoon heat.
Routes and journey times
| Route | Typical time | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| SPU → Makarska | ~1 h 15 | The riviera’s main town and harbour |
| SPU → Brela | ~1 h | Punta Rata beach and the first of the strip |
| SPU → Baška Voda | ~1 h 5 | Family resorts and the promenade |
| SPU → Tučepi & Podgora | ~1 h 20 | The long hotel beaches south of Makarska |
| SPU → Gradac | ~1 h 40 | The quiet southern end of the riviera |
| Makarska → Biokovo Skywalk | ~50 min | Chauffeured half-day; the road is narrow and worth a professional |
Local knowledge
The Biokovo road above Makarska is the region’s best half-day and its worst self-drive: single-track sections, a booking slot system for the Skywalk, and a 1,700-metre climb that turns hire-car brakes to soup on the way down. It is a much better trip with a driver who does it weekly. At sea level, note that Makarska town and the beach strip either side of it fill from about ten in the morning in August — the early swim is the good one.

Frequently asked questions
How long is the transfer from Split Airport to Makarska?
About an hour and fifteen minutes for roughly 110 km, mostly motorway.
Which airport is closest to the Makarska Riviera?
Split (SPU). Dubrovnik is about two and a half hours away and is only worth considering on an open-jaw booking.
Will you find our apartment?
Yes — send the address or a pin when you book. The riviera is built on a slope and many apartments sit above the coast road, so we plan the approach rather than guessing at it.
Can you drive us up Biokovo?
Yes, as an hourly chauffeur booking. The Skywalk needs a timed entry ticket, so tell us the slot and we will work the departure back from it.
Do you run transfers in the off season?
Yes, year-round. The riviera is quiet from November to April and the drive is faster.
