The route, honestly explained

This is the airport that surprises people: Rijeka Airport is not in Rijeka but at Omišalj, on the island of Krk, about 30 km away and across the Krk bridge. The drive is around 45 minutes to the city and closer to an hour to Opatija. Scheduled public transport is timed to a fraction of the flights, which leaves a lot of arrivals stranded in a small terminal. It is also the most convenient arrival point for Krk’s own resorts — Krk town is twenty minutes south, Baška about forty-five.

Local knowledge

Opatija is the reason many people fly into Rijeka, and it deserves the extra ten minutes past the city: a promenade built for nineteenth-century Viennese convalescents, still walkable end to end in an afternoon. If you are staying on Krk, note that the island is bigger than it looks on the map and its two coasts have completely different weather in the bura wind — worth a word with your driver before you commit to a beach day.

No. It is at Omišalj on the island of Krk, about 30 km from the city and reached over the Krk bridge — roughly 45 minutes by car.

Is there a bus from the airport?

Only for some flights, and the timetable does not match every arrival. A pre-booked car removes the risk of landing to an empty bay.

How long to Opatija?

About 55 minutes, a little more in summer traffic through Rijeka.

Do you serve the Krk resorts?

Yes — Krk town, Malinska, Njivice, Punat and Baška are all short runs from the terminal.

What is the bura and does it affect transfers?

A strong north-easterly wind on the Kvarner coast. It occasionally closes exposed bridges to high-sided vehicles; our sedans are unaffected and drivers know the alternatives.
