The route, honestly explained

Plitvice is Croatia’s most visited inland attraction and its most badly served by public transport: the intercity coaches stop on the D1 road, timetables are seasonal, and the park now runs timed entry tickets that do not care why you are late. From Zagreb the drive is about two hours, from Zadar an hour and a half, from Split around three. A private car goes to the right entrance — Entrance 1 at Rastovača for the lower lakes, Entrance 2 at Hladovina for the upper — waits while you walk, or comes back for you at an agreed time.

Local knowledge

The park sells timed entry, and the two entrances lead to genuinely different walks — a plan built around the wrong gate wastes an hour on the shuttle bus. Go early: the coach groups arrive from about ten and the boardwalks are one-way and narrow. The single best use of a private car here is the one-way version — Zagreb to Plitvice in the morning, three hours in the park, then on to Zadar or Split in the evening, with the luggage in the boot the whole time.

Can the driver wait while we walk the lakes?

Yes. Most guests book a day trip with three to four hours of waiting; the driver stays with the car and your luggage.

Can we go from Zagreb to Plitvice and then on to the coast?

That is the most efficient way to do it — one car, one price, no backtracking to Zagreb. Zadar is 1 h 30 on from the park, Split about 3 h.

Do we need to buy park tickets in advance?

In summer, yes — entry is capped and timed. Buy them yourself online, then send us the slot and we will plan the pick-up around it.
