Almost every Croatian island holiday contains the same fragile join: a flight that lands at a fixed time and a boat that leaves at one. Get it right and the day is seamless. Get it wrong and you spend an evening in a port town you had not planned to visit.
Know which boat you are on
There are two different things, and people book the wrong one constantly.
- Fast catamarans carry foot passengers only. They are quicker, run more often in season, and land in the main towns — Split to Hvar Town takes about an hour.
- Car ferries are slower, carry vehicles, and often land somewhere else entirely. The Split ferry serves Stari Grad, twenty-five minutes by road from Hvar Town.
A ticket for one is not valid on the other, and the ports at either end are not always the same ports.
Build in the right margins
Working backwards from a sailing, three things need slack: reclaim at the airport (15–30 minutes in high summer), the drive to the port (30–35 minutes from Split Airport), and boarding, which closes earlier than you expect on the car ferries. Ninety minutes between landing and sailing is tight in August. Two hours is comfortable. Anything under an hour is a plan that only works when nothing goes wrong.
The seasonal cliff
Timetables contract sharply from October. A route with six daily sailings in August may have two in November, and a missed one is no longer an inconvenience but a lost day. If you are travelling out of season, check the current timetable before you book flights, not after.
What we do differently
When a transfer is booked as one journey rather than two, we plan the pick-up backwards from your sailing, track the inbound flight, and hold the car if you are late. If the sailing is genuinely missed we move you to the next one rather than leaving you at a kerb with a ticket for a boat that has gone.
